Dolce & Gabbana sentenced to hard time

Rome - Dolce and Gabbana

An Italian Judge sentenced Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana to a year and eight months of hard time in the slammer for avoiding taxes. The designers were accused of setting up a shell company in Luxembourg for the sole purpose of sheltering about $266 million from the tax authorities.

The designers were investigated for their financial activities in 2010 and the case was later dismissed. It was reopened last November and went to trial where the pair were found guilty. The prosecutor originally asked for a three year prison term to make an example of the fashion icons. Tax dodging is considered something of a national pastime in Italy.

The convicted Dolce & Gabbana duo continue to maintain their innocence and are expected to appeal the verdict. In all likelihood the matter will continue to be dragged out and in the end they will most probably never see the inside of a jail.
